The Carnation Creek:
The Karnemelksloot in Gouda is one of the most characteristic and historical streets of the city. The street runs from the Fluwelensingel and Blekerssingel to the Voorwillenseweg and is mentioned for the first time in 1597. Around 1579, the wetering (what we now know as the Karnemelksloot) was dug on behalf of the Vroedschap of Gouda (members of the city council). The water was called 'the new canal outside Tiendewechs gate' from the moment it was dug until its name change in 1597.
The name "Karnemelksloot" refers to the transport of carnel milk to the city. Within the city walls were pig farms where pigs were fed with carnel milk. The supply of this milk to the city went through this canal, where a dairy house stood. Special carnel milk carriers were used to transport the milk up to the Tiendewegpoort.
Along the Karnemelksloot there used to be various shops and small businesses, such as coal and cigarette stores, vegetable sellers, fishmongers, soap shops, and laundries. For the residents, daily life was well catered for, with everything they needed within easy reach. Nowadays, the street is still a lively place with a rich history and a strong sense of community.
So, the Karnemelksloot is not only a beautiful street to live on, but also a place steeped in history and character.
